Ahmedabad, On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed with carrying approximately 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The aircraft was en route to London Gatwick Airport.
Incident Details
The plane took off at 1:38 PM IST (8:08 AM BST) and lost
communication with air traffic control less than a minute later, at an altitude
of 625 feet. Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions and observed thick black
smoke rising from the crash site, which was located in the Meghani Nagar
residential area near the airport perimeter.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was reportedly
among the passengers.
Casualties and Emergency Response
Initial reports suggest that at least 50 fatalities have
been confirmed, though the exact number of casualties is still under
investigation. Emergency response teams, including fire and rescue units, were
promptly deployed to the crash site. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation
(DGCA) has launched a formal inquiry into the incident.
Historical Context
This incident marks the first-ever crash involving a Boeing
787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011.
Ongoing Investigation
Aviation authorities are actively investigating the cause of
the crash. Preliminary findings indicate that the aircraft was heavily fueled
for the long-haul flight to London, which may have contributed to the intensity
of the fire.
