Introduction: Meghalaya Horror Honeymoon – The Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi Case

What began as a romantic escape to the scenic hills of Meghalaya turned into a scary tale of unfaithfulness and murder. Grooms Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam Raghuvanshi, both from Indore, had recently tied the world most faithful relation in May 2025 and set out for their honeymoon in the attractive region of Cherrapunji. However, only days after their arrival, Raja was found dead at the bottom of a valley near the famous Wei Sawdong Water Falls.

Primary concerns over a missing persons case soon gave way to a horrible murder investigation that exposed a disturbing sedition. Shockingly, Raja’s own wife, Sonam, was named the prime suspect, accused of plotting his death with the help of alleged accomplices, including a suspected lover.

As investigators unthreaded the events leading to Raja’s death, the nation was gripped by the shocking details of cheating, a planned killing, and deep familial disloyalty. This case not only devastated two families but also sparked intense public debate, making it one of the most talked-about crimes of the year.

Background

Raja, 29, and Sonam, 25, were married on May 11, 2025, and embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya on May 20. They checked out of a homestay in Nongriat village near Cherrapunji on May 23. Sonam made a final call to her mother around 1:43 PM that day, after which both phones were switched off. The couple's rented scooter was found abandoned on the Shillong–Sohra road the next day, intensifying concerns about their whereabouts.

On June 2, Raja's decomposed body was discovered at the base of a gorge beneath the Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra. The body was identified by a tattoo on his right hand, and forensic evidence indicated foul play.

Investigation and Arrest

A local tourist guide reported seeing the couple accompanied by three men shortly before Raja's disappearance, providing a crucial lead. Further investigation uncovered that Sonam had been in contact with four men: her alleged lover, Raj Singh Kushwaha, and his childhood friends—Anand Kurmi, Akash Rajput, and Vishal Singh Chauhan. Authorities also found a mangalsutra near Raja's body, which led to inconsistencies in Sonam's account and strengthened the case against her.

On June 9, Sonam was arrested in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, after surrendering to the police. She was later transferred to Meghalaya for custodial interrogation. Four individuals, including Sonam, have been arrested in connection with the murder, while a fifth suspect remains at large.

Confession and Motive

During police interrogation, Sonam confessed to orchestrating her husband's murder. She admitted to hiring the four men to kill Raja during their honeymoon. The motive behind the crime appears to be a combination of personal grievances and financial issues. Sonam had reportedly been in contact with Raj Singh Kushwaha, who was allegedly her lover and worked at her brother’s firm. Authorities also found evidence of financial transactions worth Rs 9 lakh, which she used to organize the honeymoon.

Public Reaction

The case has sparked widespread media coverage and public debate. Raja's family has demanded the death penalty for those involved, while Sonam's family has called for a CBI investigation, disputing the police's narrative. Sonam's brother publicly declared his belief in her involvement and has severed ties with her, expressing support for Raja's family.

Conclusion

The Meghalaya honeymoon murder case continues to unfold, with authorities piecing together evidence and testimonies. The involvement of close family members in such a heinous act has left both families and the public in shock, raising questions about trust, relationships, and the extent to which personal motives can lead to tragic outcomes.
