Monsoon Resumes After Brief Pause
The Southwest Monsoon has regained momentum across India
after a two-week lull. As of mid-June, rainfall activity has intensified in Maharashtra,
Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Karnataka, offering much-needed
relief from the intense summer heat.
Rainfall Highlights
Lonavala (Maharashtra) received 123 mm of rainfall in 24
hours.
Tamhini and Bhira recorded 220 mm and 153 mm, respectively.
Mumbai saw over 100 mm of rainfall in several areas,
prompting Orange Alerts.
Odisha and coastal Karnataka are under continuous heavy rain
warnings until June 20.
️ Heatwave Relief
Northern and central India, which were experiencing extreme
heat, are now seeing a drop in temperature due to the monsoon’s advance. The Indian
Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the heatwave conditions will
subside completely in the next 7–10 days.
Agricultural Impact
The monsoon revival is crucial for India’s Kharif crop
season. Farmers are now preparing for the sowing of rice, maize, pulses, and
cotton, especially in states like Punjab, Bihar, and West Bengal. The rainfall
will also help refill reservoirs, reducing the water deficit recorded in early
June.
